  1. I'm loving this chair

Posted by WHOOPI GOLDBERG on 31st Oct 2018

I'm loving this chair it's all I can do to get out of it to go to work at The View everyday. I am so happy! Thank you thank you thank you thank you, you are the reason why I am not cursing anyone out all because of this marvelous chair.

  2. Amazing massage chair, feels just like a person doing it!!

Posted by Chul Bum on 26th Oct 2018

When I first did my research on massage chairs, I didn't know where to start. I visited one of the Kahuna stores near my home and the sales person was so kind to me. She explained each and every thing about the chair and answered all my questions thoroughly. She gave us the SM-9000 at an amazing price!! I do not regret buying this chair. It feels as if I'm getting a professional massage from a person!!

  3. Classy Chair

Just received the chair today. This chair was easy to assemble, took me 15 minute and it is probably better for those under 6'2". Still, I love this chair. Comfy even as a sitting chair. Has great options. the chair is quite classy.

I'm going to be very thorough in this review as I wish someone had done for me before I purchased one of these chairs. I'm giving this chair 4 stars mostly because I'm a pretty tough grader and though it is an exceptional massage chair by comparison to most, it still is not where it could be with just a few simple things that the designers over looked. First I'm going to start with the company it's self. So far in all of my research Kahuna seems to be an up and coming business with a couple of really good things going for them. Though they are a "Made in China" product, their warranty for the price is probably one of the best and actually one of the main reasons why I decided to go with them. They also seem to be quite innovative and willing to provide lots of extras just as standard features. The one draw back to consider is that size is not universal. This chair is good for me, but I'm only 5' 8". I don't think I'd enjoy it nearly as much if I were over 6'. With that being said, I’ve actually had 2 Kahuna chairs, the first being the Kahuna “Spirit” and after returning that I’ve upgraded to the Kahuna SM 9000. The exchange was well done by Good Price World, the distributer that I purchased from. However, be forewarned, do not think that you can just order a chair and expect them to just pick up the tab on the shipping if you want to return it for no exchange. In other words, yes, shipping is free unless you decide it’s not what you wanted. Then just know, you’ll be responsible for about $600 on the return of the chair no matter how you slice it. I’m not really disappointed by this, as it would be pretty difficult for a company to say, “Sure try out our chair and send it back if you don’t like it, on our dime”. These chairs are heavy and shipping is no small deal. Anyway, Good Price World did honor my request and sent out the SM 9000 as an upgrade to the Spirit without question and took it back with no restocking fee, (It was returned in perfect order, within 30 days.) They also gave me a fair price on the upgrade, which they just added the difference to the price of the previous order. All in all I’m very pleased with the way Good Price World handles its customers on that level.

The biggest drawback to this company and the distributor is the way they fail to get information out there about their product. I have looked high and low for documentation, videos or even reviews about this chair and there is virtually nothing. No one has taken the time to review this chair extensively and even the small promo piece that is out there, doesn’t really give you a good example of what this chair is like. I asked for the manual to be downloaded and even that is limited to a remote diagram and a few pictures for assembly. Kahuna doesn’t even do that great of a job sharing the differences between their products. Now in fairness to Kahuna, I will say that documentation is limited on many massage chairs out there. However, in many cases you can usually go find a store that is carrying that product so you can at least try it out, not so with Kahuna. The only places you could try out their chairs were one showroom on the west coast and the other on the east coast near DC. They did direct me to Brookstone to have me try out a chair that they thought might be close to theirs. (It really wasn’t.) All I’m saying here is be very careful, it is a big investment and almost every chair I’ve tried in this price range has some differences that you’ll want to know before purchasing.
So would I have purchased this chair if it was in a line up of similar chairs in this price range and I hadn’t already had $600 invested in the previous purchase?

Well let me put it this way, for me the 3 big issues that separate an “OK” massage chair and a good one is 3D massage, quality construction and a great warranty; the SM 9000 has all of those, so my answer would probably be yes, it would still be my choice.

So that brings me to the second part of this, the chair itself. The SM 9000 is a really well built chair, and has had absolutely no problems since the day I put it together. That’s right, you do have to do a little bit of assembly, and yes it is not well explained in the manual (again, very poor information). However, after about an hour and a little bit of interpreting the instructions I did have it together and working perfectly. (They would do well to provide an instructional video for this process.) The chair is made of very good material and the hardware along with the connectors are also top quality. There are about 9 preprogramed massage sessions that the chair offers and those are all a little different and very nice. However, they differ greatly from the manual controls and settings in that you cannot replicate the depth of the 3D rollers or the simultaneous filling of air bags like you get in the preprogramed settings. This was a big disappointment for me, as you would think in manual you’d have more control over intensity and speed. One other big drawback on this topic was the fact that you cannot change the times of any of the massages either on manual or preprogramed. Furthermore there is only one preprogramed massage that is longer than 10 minutes and then you have to turn it back on to start another massage. Even the Spirit had a way of allowing you to increase the time up to 30 Min. if you wanted to keep going in the middle of your massage. Common, who goes for a 10 min. massage? So in my estimation, the biggest draw back to this chair is the limited and highly simplistic functionality of the remote itself. And I would suggest to Kahuna that they simply design and send out an upgraded, higher functioning remote for the SM 9000; a chair that is already out classing the feel of most other massage chairs in its price range. I’d pay for a remote that had time extension, more options on 3D depth and better speed and intensity control.

Now for the good stuff: The really cool thing about this chair is that it has a 3D massage mechanism that is elevated much the same way that air struts work in automobiles. It is a much smoother transition than the mechanical ones that most 3D massage chairs use. It also could possibly translate into less possibility of break down due to fewer moving parts. The chair also has a foot massage that has 3 different settings and with the wrap around airbags it feels better than any of dozens of chairs I’ve tried out, including the Inada “Dreamwave”. The heated rollers are also a nice feature in that they bring direct heat deeper into your back, however I feel as though it is more gimmick than value added. Even though there are no calf rollers on the SM 9000 (Don’t be fooled by the misleading video that is out there by Kahuna.) the air bags that surround the calf muscles are really nice. They do a really good job of providing pressure in just the right spots, as do the arm and wrist airbags as well. The one thing that it doesn’t have is automatic lengthening on the foot massage extension, however there are pros and cons on that as well. The springs that retract the foot massage on the SM 9000 was a little tight at first however now that I’ve gotten used to them they’re feeling pretty good. The chair is one unit and it feels like a nicely formed cockpit that moves together with your body, so there’s no point where the back moves and takes your arms and hands out of the position they were when you were sitting upright, (this was a draw back on the Kahuna Spirit). I find myself smiling as soon as I get into the chair and I have to admit, I’ve grown to like the chair each day just a little bit more.

So aside from just a couple of things that don’t quite make this a “perfect 5 star chair” I feel like the Kahuna 9000 is a very good massage chair for the money, and I would match the warranty, quality and the massage to some of the much higher priced chairs that are out there. It just needs a little better tweaking on some pretty easy things to change…..Common Kahuna, just give us more time in a chair that is really really nice.

  5. Common Kahuna give us more time!
